About Councilman Mark Rodriguez
Councilman Mark A. Rodriguez is originally from San Antonio, TX. He joined the US Army in 1996 and started his career at Fort Huachuca where he attended the Geospatial Intelligence Imagery Analyst Course. He spent 21 years on Active Duty, has two combat deployments to Iraq supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and spent time in Korea, Central America and South America as well. He has resided in Sierra Vista, AZ since 2014 when he arrived for his final Army assignment. He retired from Active Duty in 2017 and has been employed as a government contract instructor on Fort Huachuca since then.
Mark was first appointed to the Siera Vista City Council in 2021 when a seat on city council was vacated and then was successfully elected to his first 4-year term in 2022.
He is passionate about volunteering and still volunteers locally with various organizations. One of those organizations is the Sierra Vista Fire & Medical Dept where he and his team have conducted monthly smoke detector checks and installations for the local community since 2014. Most of the residents his smoke detector team services are 55+ years of age. He enjoys the opportunity to speak with the senior community while in their homes and loves to get feedback on ways to improve the quality of life for that demographic. He is working with other business owners and non-profits on putting together a "Senior Symposium" and wants to ensure everyone is aware of the services and leisure activities available to them in our community.
Being a Veteran himself, he understands how vital our Veterans are to our community and often volunteers for events hosted by the Warrior Healing Center and Cochise Serving Veterans (CSV), where he is also the City Liaison to the CSV Board. He also supports the Huachuca 50 and all of their initiatives that ensure Fort Huachuca remains a strong and relevant part of the Department of Defense. Mark is also a member of VFW Post #9972 and American Legion Post #52.
Having attended the Citizens Police Academy, Citizens Fire Academy and being a former EMT and Volunteer Firefighter with Whetstone Fire, he is a big proponent of our local first responders/public safety. He is also the Chair of the Cochise College EMS Advisory Board. He supports local law enforcement agencies and their initiatives spanning all the way down to the border. He enjoys doing ride-alongs with local law enforcement to get a better sense of what they deal with on a daily basis. He understands the importance of having good partnerships with local federal agencies and his son-in-law is also a local Border Patrol Agent.
He is a huge supporter of our local youth and all their initiatives and is the Council Liaison to the Sierra Vista Youth Council. Mark is also a big advocate for ensuring that youth of all abilities are included and supported by our community, so one of his favorite organizations to support is the Avengers Inclusion Organization which promotes inclusion for all members of the community with special needs. He is also a big supporter of the Sierra Vista Boys and Girls Club and our local Special Olympics organization. He is working on putting together a "Youth Roundtable" where all local youth organizations will have a seat at the table to discuss their initiatives and ideas for our community.
Our natural resources and water are also very important to him, so he attends the Upper San Pedro Partnership meetings and events which focus on preserving the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area (SPRNCA) and ensuring the long-term viability of Fort Huachuca. He understands the significance the San Pedro River has to our community and why we must all do our part in protecting it.
When speaking with State Officials, he constantly ensures that Sierra Vista and Fort Huachuca are at the forefront of the conversation. He is also a very active member of the National League of Cities and is currently the vice chair of the Military Communities Council and a board member at large for the Hispanic Elected Officials Council.
He is married to Nancy Ledesma and among them, they have 6 children and 2 granddaughters. His oldest daughter is currently serving on Active Duty in the Marine Corps. In his free time, he makes time for his family, attends his children’s and grandchildren’s school events, enjoys live music, getting a motorcycle ride in when he can and traveling as much as possible.
